Make Amiga IFF pictures from any image

Feed it a PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP and you get a proper IFF/ILBM back, ready for Workbench, a slideshow, or as cover art in PocketLauncher. It all happens in your browser. Nothing gets uploaded.

1 · Pick images

Up to 8 at a time. You can also drag them anywhere on the page, or paste one straight from the clipboard. Each one keeps its own output name, which starts out as whatever the file was called.

No images yet.

Optional. Ignore it and every file keeps its own name. For PocketLauncher: if the cover sits next to the game, beside its .slave, any .iff name will do. In a separate covers folder it has to be numbered, so use _SCR0, _SCR1… and match the slave name.

2 · Screen format

Background fills the bars that Fit leaves over, and it is what you see through transparent pixels. IFF has no alpha channel, so a PNG with transparency gets flattened onto this colour.

3 · Convert

The preview next to each file is read back out of the finished IFF, not taken from the picture before encoding. So if it looks right, the file is right.

About some of these settings

EHB (Extra Half-Brite) is an OCS/ECS trick, and it is not really 64 free colours. You get 32, and the chip hands you a second set at exactly half brightness whether you like it or not. So the palette is built for the first 32 and the rest is derived from them. The file is flagged as EHB in its CAMG chunk, which is what makes a real Amiga open it in that mode.

Interlaced modes get twice the vertical resolution by drawing the odd and even lines on alternating frames. Fine for a still picture, horrible for anything that moves. 128 and 256 colours want AGA (A1200 or A4000); an OCS/ECS machine will not open those.

The file is a plain FORM ILBM: a BMHD, a CMAP, a CAMG when the mode calls for one, and a BODY packed with ByteRun1. Odd-length chunks get their pad byte, the way the IFF spec asks. Any Amiga viewer opens it, and so does anything modern that reads ILBM.

The pixel aspect ratio goes into the file too, so HiRes and interlaced pictures show up with the right proportions instead of stretched.
